<image:caption>Who do I look up to ? . . My Mom ❤️ Why? Because she is the strongest most loving caring person I know, that will never give up on you. There is a lot of people I look up to, but today I will share about my mom. My mom has always taught us to stick up for ourselves, to be kind, respectful and most of all caring to one another. She is the strongest most independent woman I know whom will do anything for her kids and grandkids. She has faced many obstacles in her life but has shown us that we can get through anything. Today and every other day I am grateful that she is here helping me with raising my daughter and just being there when we need her the most. I follow in my moms foot steps in taking care of everyone, as much as we are tired, we still pull through for everyone. I am raising my daughter to be just as strong and loving as her grandma is. I look up to my mom, why? Because she is the best mom and grandma that anyone could ask for. ❤️</image:caption>

<image:caption>Who do I look up to?! I chose this photo of my children for the photo contest. I look up to my kids Hunter and Pazanne because of the resilience they have and the love they have for life. We’re a little family of three and have been through so much together. They bounce back quicker than I do on our hard days and I honestly couldn’t have made it as far as I did or try as hard as I do if it weren’t for them. I love everything about them and they have their own unique characteristics that make them who they are. Hunter is a little gentle man who is so sweet and kind to others and Pazanne is just a defiant little girl that knows what she wants. I know they’ll grow up to be such beautiful Dene’s and am blessed to have them by my side and as my children. ❤️</image:caption>

<image:caption>My grandfather Frederick was and still is important to me but not as much as my son is important to me now. my grandpa taught me both of the dene and mula way of life but the dene life I didn’t like at first because it was tough as heck but eventually as I got older I started to love the dene ways and now I get to pass on the knowledge, the stories and skills my son will need. Honestly I’d wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my son, wild child but worth it in the end. With my grandpa and my son combined, they are the best duo I’ve ever seen, it’s great to see my aba act like a child again with his Great Grandson. My grandpa has all these years of plan for naze already, to the point where he can’t wait for him to get older. These two adorable beings, I’d just love them to death❤️</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am entering the photo contest, here is a picture of my Dad, Bob McPherson and little sister. My dad is a very important person in my life. He is the hardest working man I know. He is very respectful, kind, generous and honest. He teaches me a lot, to be respectful to everyone and everything around me. I never see my dad giving up, I always see him motivated to keep giving his best effort, and thats what inspires me to give it my best effort and keep trying and not to give up. We may not always get along, but I realize you are only wanting me to make the right decisions in life. I am very blessed and fortunate to have you guiding me day by day, teaching me life-long skills that I will take on for the rest of my life. You are my best friend and always will be, thanks for everything dad.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Who I look up to? My Momma Why? My mother is everything and more to me. She is the reason why I am here in this world. My mother has raised me with great care, love and affection in a safe and healthy environment. My mother is my role model. If there in anyone in this world I want to be like, it’s her. She is resilient, empowering, strong, kind hearted, powerful and beautiful. She perseveres through all that is meant to dominate her and bounces back. I admire my mother a lot; she raised myself and my 3 sisters alone. I have learned all of my success lessons from her. Growing up my mother never fancied materialistic things , she always made it known that culture and education was important and you will need one or the other to survive. Because of this she also taught us appreciation and gratitude. She is a born fighter, she is culturally experienced throughout her whole life and has passed down all her teachings to myself and my siblings as well as my children whom she takes great pride in and helps care for. My mother had numerous jobs, worked to provide for us during the winter months. Moved for work away from home all the time to continue to feed and care for us. In the summer she would take us to our fish camp where she would set and check net, harvest and prepare our food for the winter months. She would know how to set a whole camp by either gathering water, snow or ice, gathering wood, set up the stage, cut the trees with chainsaw, and set up the tents. She is strong willed with cultural survival skills and frankly knows a lot about the land, animals, plants what parts of them are used and for what and especially the native art of sewing. She can honestly make something out of nothing. She taught us independence and how to appreciate hard work and all that comes with after it’s been done. Because of her teachings I knew at the age of six how to harvest and prepare fish, moose, geese and caribou. How to use as much as you can from these animals. Because of her I now know how to sew for my own children like she did for each and everyone of me and my siblings growing up. Because of her I have never ending love for my children. She is a strong believer in Christian religion as we’re part of the first baptist church from BeauDel. Teaching her children and grandchildren is most important in this aspect of our lives and all the good that comes out of it. She has sacrificed many things in her life for them to be possible in mine. She has been my rock, my shoulder to cry on, my listening ear, my mentor, my support, my guide and my salvation. She made my life beautiful. She raised me to be the woman I am.</image:caption>

<image:caption>1. What does this photo mean to you? This photo means a lot to me, because this teepee belongs to my grandpa Alfred and my grandma Jane Taneton. A few years back my grandma passed on, and last year it hit me hard when I first started to learn how to fix hide. I Realizing that I never took the chance to learn all these traditional skills with my grandma. So today I’m so thankful to be working in her teepee and teaching my sister to work on the hide ❤️ 2. What do you like about this photo? My grandparents teepee, I like how it’s so bright on the outside but looking in its dark. But still able to see me 3. What your experience has been like during the COVID-19 pandemic? Its been a lot of reading for work. A lot of cleaning, organizing and reorganizing. I didn’t spend a lot of time on the land , But things been good and being safe</image:caption>

<image:caption>I choose this picture because it shows me preparing my moose hide outside. 1) This photo means a lot because it shows me as a Dene woman still motivated to learn my traditions during the pandemic in a safe social distancing manner. 2) I like this photo because it shows me outside and being active instead of being quarantined inside, as someone who gets easily depressed I think being able to get outside for this purpose is healthy. While keeping in mind social distancing is important, but so is getting outside. 3) My experience during this pandemic has been very surreal. It’s crazy to be prepared for this pandemic and not feel panicked about it quite yet. Which in all is pretty scary and I am still kinda shocked that there is a global pandemic going on. I pray we keep flattening the curve the best we can.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was de-hairing a moose hide this past week and enjoying a cup of tea. I am truly grateful ... I’ve come to appreciate this honourable teaching; and I feel a step closer to my grandmother’s journey of being a Dene woman & Dene mother. The only goal that I have of this year yet is to get to the smoking stage of this moose hide. It takes a lot of techniques, tactics and patience. I still have many things to learn about working on a moosehide, and I’m openly & willingly ready. Thank you for this submission to the photo contest. I feel that being quarantined has been affecting my mental health lately, but I found some peace on this day. I hope all my fam & friends are staying safe during this uncertain time of COVID-19.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Title is "ICE"olation Photo of my Nephew Orin Yukon (age 3) learning how to Ice-fish on Great Bear lake. 1. These photos of my Nephew means to me that educating the younger generation about basic survival skills teaches the children their cultural history that has many benefits learning their traditional ways of life. This is a powerful practice that provides increased insight on our Dene histories, stories and traditions that can be passed down through generations. 2. I love these photos because it makes me proud that the younger generation have a chance of learning and spending time out on the land during this pandemic other than being quarantine inside. Technology these days has a major impact on children learning their traditional ways and being quarantine has reminded me that basic life skills are very important for everyone to know and teach. 3. My experience during this Covid-19 pandemic has been alarming, but going back to my hometown in Deline from down south to be with my family makes me feel safer & happier being in quarantine with my family knowing that everyone is safe is a blessing. These out on the land experiences has made everyone more connected to the land where our ancestors once fulfilled and lived their life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I chose this selfie with the teepee in the background because it’s my grandmother Laura Lennie”s one. 1) My grandma’s teepee means a lot to our family as we had shared many memories with her in there. I remember when we were kids we were always in the teepee with Rosie, Nellie, my grandma and family all sitting around the fire cutting meat, making dry meat, cooking on the open fire and them telling stories or showing us how to do this and that. 2) I like this photo because it’s showing my grandma’s teepee still standing and holding strong (like we are all doing today, holding strong lol). I am also very grateful today that we are still able to use her teepee with our kids and showing them what she taught us growing up. 3) My experience during this pandemic has been a little scary. With everything being closed and shut down, limits on people being in the stores and on what you buy, shortage on food supply, social distancing, self isolating and just the uncertainty in this crisis. Since being home I’ve been keeping myself busy with my daughter, my work, my spring cleaning and just trying to keep positive through this all. It was awesome to see our community come together and support everyone in need and to see everyone following the precautions as much as they can to keep our community safe. I hope and pray that everyone stays safe and healthy though this tough time, and that we flatten the curve. As for now, my daughter is due for a bath lol take care and stay safe.</image:caption>

I like this photo because it shows that what young people can do when we get together n just do it. My experience has been amazing during this covid-19, I’ve been out on the land almost everyday, I got lots of wood for the community. About 8cords with my uncles, meat For the people, n ice fishing. <image:caption>The reason I’ve picked this photo is because I’ve had a moment of clarity on my walk before taking it, thinking about how lucky we are as Dene people to call this place our home, our people, our families and how much generosity we show each other throughout the whole Sahtu. The reason I like this photo is because how content and comfortable I am in my life at this exact moment. For a while I felt like I’ve been on unsettled water that’s constantly going and not quite flowing in the right direction. This is the first photo I took where I actually felt like things in my life were finally getting back on track for me, which is a good reminder of how important it is to take care of our Mental Health. It's pretty unreal how fast the GNWT has moved on closing the Airlines to the communities and also shutting down schools, offices, the churches and also limiting custom service at certain places such as the health centre, Northern Store and local board buildings. Let's not forget that this is a universal concern that is happening all over the globe, and for the fast actions they have taken for the safety of the people in the Sahtu, I'm glad we are taking the necessary approaches to keep our communities safe. We have to keep each other safe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My skill: pluck, singe, and gut geese or ducks. I am working on black ducks. This is a skill that many women and families acquire when we have hunters within our households. It is a tradition that is carried every spring, and I picked it up especially after I learnt how to make dry-geese. A teaching that was passed onto me from my in-laws. In this video, I am singeing whatever is left of the feathers on the geese. Personally, I enjoy doing a good job on my ducks, so I always try to make my ducks like a turkey (look at the third photo). Hehe! My favourite part about working on ducks is cooking them. I like to gut the ducks, boil it, make soup and bannock with it ... and of course, share it with my family. One thing on my bucket list is to stuff a swan and roast it. I do not consider myself an expert at this, but I do enjoy learning the more that I work on this skill. I’d also like to mention that I am very fortunate to have a partner that plucks all the ducks or geese during his hunt, before he comes home, it makes a big difference. ☺️</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here’s some special moments from my summers spent in the MacKenzie Mountains! Over the years of working in hunting camps, I’ve learned so much about wilderness skills, hunting, cooking, and appreciating the land. It takes a lot of experience and skills, something I never thought I could achieve. With a few cuts, bruises, and tears I got stronger and more confident each day. Mother Nature is not very forgiving sometimes but it can teach us so much, I believe living on the land is one of the most important life skills! I’m thankful for every animal the creator presents to us, it’s such a privilege to live this lifestyle where we hunt our food in this beautiful untouched land far from civilization. I hope I’m able to inspire other Sahtu youth, especially women, to be able to thrive in these hills and appreciate this pristine environment ❤️ These photos mean a lot to me because if you showed me these pictures when I was a terrified 12 year old girl showing up to the unknown universe of a hunting camp I wouldn’t believe it!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here's a sewing project of slippers I'm making for my In-laws, beginning of my teen years my ama, mom & my aunt showing my sister's and I how to sew. Didn't take long to catch on, we would spend evenings sewing and sewing. And I learn how to sew slippers mukluks, mitts, purse card holder, I am still learning, and I'm absolutely thankful and grateful for them showing the Dene way of how I can take care and provide my little family. I really like sewing, because it nice sitting with the women enjoying my time alone, and I love to show my skills, teach those who are just learning. I thought of all the mitts mukluks my ama has made for me over the years was easy. But doing it myself for first couple times was really hard and difficult. I'm so glad my ama is still here and still sewing 24/7 ,and looking forward to sew more. Learn more, and carry on the traditional ways</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here shows some pictures of me teaching Gwich’in/Inuvaluit youth skills to live off the land and how to de-hair/flesh moose hide, drymeat making, How to make dry fish and how to sew oh and I added picture of me on the land trapping. I have had many opportunities to go to Delta and practice my traditional skills where I feel comfortable on the land. These pictures show that a person can carry both roles of a man & women and it takes a lot out of a person to do these things. Here shows some of the things I did while in the Delta this past year I taught and learned so much while down there I even managed to learn a little bit of The Gwich’in language while over there and I want youth to know that you don’t have to be shy or ashamed of your culture an it’s such a blessing to have the time to sit with an elder and just practice these things. I’m ever so grateful to have had my grandparents growing up to have theses skills passed on to me and that I can show my kids. Not that I have any yet haha SAHTU STRONG!</image:caption>

It also shows inter generational traditional teaching, knowledge sharing, and skill building that will steer us to be self sufficient on land. <image:caption>I love this picture, it shows my skill of beading/sewing. This is a recent photo of Myself beading a small project (a Moose hide KeyChain). I’m drawn to beadwork and other sewing projects, Because I find it comforting, it also helps relaxes the mind & I’m good at it. It may take a lot of patience’s & time but it’s worth it; The joy & relief of completing a project, the outcome & uniqueness of what the mind can do towards your very own homemade/handmade art. I still have a lot to learn, such as putting big projects together, so I’ll take whatever chance I have to watch & learn, then go from there. Teach what I can towards who’s willing to learn, especially pass on what I know to my Children in the future. I feel it’s very important to carry on our Families, Elders, Ancestors Culture & Traditions.</image:caption>
